Tips to help you

Tips to save you money

  • Combining home and contents cover within the one policy is generally cheaper than buying separate home and contents policies
  • By placing additional insurance products such as home and motor with the same insurance provider, many offer discounts (including Resilium)
  • If you choose a higher excess, it may result in a premium reduction. Ask for more details.

Tips to ensuring the right cover for you

  • Our policy offers 'new for old' replacement. Therefore, you need to consider what the replacement costs of your contents are, not just what you think they're worth now.
  • You might need to specify your jewellery if you have over $4,000 in total, or any piece is valued over $1,000.
  • You also might need to specify your CDs, DVD, record or computer software collection if they exceed more than $5,000 in value.
  • We recommend for all your contents, you take copies of your receipts, valuations and photos of items (just in case you ever need to make a claim). You might like to keep a spare copy of the list with friends, family or in a fireproof container or area.
  • When repairing or replacing damaged parts of your home, you will be paid the extra cost of making these parts comply with any changes to building laws or regulations that came into effect after your home was originally built or altered. When arranging or renewing your insurance, it's a good idea to check with your local council to review the relevant building laws and make sure your sum insured covers such costs which may arise if you need to rebuild or replace.
  • If you own a strata title property and renovate your unit, such as the kitchen or bathroom (or have bought a renovated unit), you may need to include items such as new flooring or benchtops under your contents insurance. You should check with the body corporate to find out your level of cover.
