Wild weather is coming – prepare and plan for severe weather conditions

Severe weather events are on the rise globally – you only have to scan the news online on any given day to see that weather events seem to be on a scale like we’ve never quite experienced before. Whether it be a bush fire, flood or cyclone – and Australia has had them all in the last 12 months, Mother Nature certainly has been brutal.

With the recent announcement by the Bureau of Meteorology that Australia has begun experiencing the first active La Niña season since 2010-2012, we can expect an increase in tropical cyclones, flooding and other severe weather conditions over the coming months.

The Bureau of Meteorology further estimates “a 66 per cent chance of more cyclones than average for the Australian region this season — and they are expected to form earlier than normal.”

Given this latest update from the weather bureau and confirmation from the Parliament of Australia that extreme weather events are on the rise, there has never been a better time to prepare for the inevitable severe weather conditions that come hand in hand with an Australian summer.

What can you do to be prepared and minimise risks?

November to March is generally the most volatile in terms of severe weather activity. As we begin Summer, take the time now to consider what you’d need to do and how quickly you can respond if a severe weather warning like a fire or flood takes place.

If you run a business, make sure your team knows where to go and what precautions to take should a weather disaster like flood, cyclone or fire eventuate. A good place to start, would be to download some helpful top tips from the Australian Government featuring details on how to plan and prepare for an emergency.

In addition to your family, think about the other things that are important to you and how you would recover from their loss. With this in mind, it’s important to make sure your insurance is up to date and reflects enough cover for a worst-case scenario.
